Do sharks die if they stop swimming?
Some sharks must keep water moving over their gills to breathe (obligate ram ventilators), but many species can pump water while resting on the seabed. Not every shark dies if it stops swimming. Sharks extract oxygen by passing water over their gills, and different species use different methods to keep that flow going.

What is the difference between a seal and a sea lion?
Sea lions have visible ear flaps and can walk on their flippers; true seals have no external ears and move on land by wriggling on their bellies. Both are pinnipeds but belong to different families. Seals and sea lions are both pinnipeds — fin-footed marine mammals — but they belong to different families with distinct anatomy and behaviour.

Are dolphins fish or mammals?
Dolphins are mammals. They breathe air through a blowhole, nurse their young with milk, and are warm-blooded — despite living in the sea. Dolphins belong to the order Cetacea alongside whales and porpoises. Like all mammals, they have lungs, mammary glands and hair follicles at birth — even though adults appear hairless and fish-like in shape.

What is the difference between a turtle and a tortoise?
Tortoises live on land with sturdy, unwebbed feet and high-domed shells. Turtles live in water and have webbed feet or flippers and more streamlined shells. Taxonomically, tortoises belong to the order Testudines — the turtle order — but “turtle” in everyday speech usually means aquatic or semi-aquatic species while “tortoise” means land specialists in the family Testudinidae.

Are pangolins endangered?
Yes. All eight pangolin species are protected under CITES Appendix I, and most are listed from Vulnerable to Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List. Pangolins are widely reported as the most trafficked mammal. Pangolins are scaly, ant-eating mammals found in Africa and Asia.

Why are orangutans endangered?
All three orangutan species are Critically Endangered, mainly because of palm-oil-driven deforestation, illegal logging and the pet trade, which kills mothers to capture infants. Orangutans are Asia’s only great apes — Bornean, Sumatran and Tapanuli species all hold Critically Endangered status on the IUCN Red List.

Are elephants endangered?
African forest elephants are Critically Endangered; African bush elephants are Endangered; Asian elephants are Endangered on the IUCN Red List. Poaching and habitat loss remain the main threats. Elephants are keystone species that shape savannas and forests through seed dispersal, trail creation and water access.

Are Komodo dragons endangered?
Komodo dragons (Varanus komodoensis) are listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List. Their range is limited to a handful of Indonesian islands and is shrinking due to habitat loss and climate pressure. Varanus komodoensis is the world’s largest lizard, reaching about three metres in length on dry savanna and tropical forest of Komodo, Rinca and neighbouring Indonesian islands.

Conservation bodies estimate more than 75,000 parrots and other wild-caught birds are trafficked internationally each year, though the true figure is likely higher because much trade is undocumented. Parrots are among the most seized birds in wildlife enforcement raids worldwide.

Extinct in the Wild (EW) is an IUCN Red List category for species that survive only in captivity or cultivation — with no confirmed wild population. It is one step above Extinct. The IUCN Red List category Extinct in the Wild (EW) applies when no confirmed self-sustaining population exists in native habitat — only captive or cultivated individuals remain.
