Extinct animals are species with no living individuals left anywhere on Earth. This guide profiles 25 of them — from the dodo and thylacine to the baiji, lost in 2006 — with the documented cause of each extinction and the living species facing that same pressure right now.

Extinct, extinct in the wild, functionally extinct

These three terms are used interchangeably in everyday writing and mean very different things in conservation. The distinction decides whether anything can still be done.

Extinct

No individuals remain alive anywhere, wild or captive. Declared only after exhaustive surveys of the known range find nothing.

Example: the dodo, the thylacine, the great auk.

EW

Extinct in the wild

Survives only in captivity or cultivation. No wild population remains, but the species is still here — and reintroduction is possible.

Example: scimitar-horned oryx, Père David's deer.

No formal category

Functionally extinct

Individuals survive, but too few to breed and recover. The outcome is settled while the animals are still alive.

Example: the northern white rhino — two females, neither able to carry a pregnancy.

Why animals go extinct

Six drivers account for almost every documented extinction. In practice they rarely act alone — habitat loss creates small isolated populations, and a second pressure removes their ability to recover.

Habitat loss and fragmentation Clearance for farming, logging, mining and development breaks a range into isolated pockets too small to sustain a population. Woolly mammoth — the mammoth steppe collapsed and fragmented the herds. The primary threat to orangutans, Asian elephants and tigers.
Overexploitation Hunting, fishing and trade taken faster than a population can replace itself. Rarity raises the price, which accelerates rather than slows the take. Great auk — killed for down, then killed harder once collectors wanted the last ones. Driving pangolins, rhinos and totoaba, and with them the vaquita.
Invasive species Introduced predators and competitors arrive somewhere nothing has evolved defences against them. Island species with low reproductive rates collapse in decades. Dodo — pigs, rats and macaques ate the eggs. The main threat to New Zealand's kākāpō, kiwi and takahē.
Disease Pathogens moved between continents by trade and travel meet populations with no immunity, and can cross an entire range faster than any conservation response. Golden toad — chytrid fungus, inside a protected reserve. Chytrid affects over 500 amphibian species; facial tumour disease is consuming Tasmanian devils.
Climate change Shifts in temperature and rainfall move habitat out from under species that cannot follow it — especially mountain, polar and cloud-forest specialists with nowhere higher or colder to go. Golden toad — a rising cloud base dried its breeding pools. Polar bears, coral reef systems, and every high-altitude endemic.
Small population effects Below a threshold size, inbreeding, failed breeding behaviour and pure chance take over. The original threat stops mattering; the population simply cannot recover. Pyrenean ibex — the last individual was killed by a falling tree. The position of the vaquita, the Javan rhino and the northern white rhino.

Every one of these is still happening

None of the extinctions on this page was inevitable, and none was caused by a force nobody understood at the time. Each one has a living counterpart facing the same pressure right now — and unlike the animals above, these can still be reached.

The species that recovered — the kākāpō from 51 birds, the Mediterranean monk seal from a few hundred, the black rhino from 2,400 — did so for one reason. Somebody funded the work before the population reached double digits.

    Critically Endangered

    A flightless, ground-nesting, slow-breeding parrot on islands overrun by introduced predators — the dodo's situation almost exactly, except the kākāpō is still here. Intensive predator control and nest guarding have lifted it from 51 birds in 1995 to over 240.

    Endangered

    The thylacine's closest surviving relative, on the same island, now facing a transmissible facial cancer that has cut wild numbers by more than 80% since 1996. Insurance populations and disease-resistant breeding are the only things standing between it and the same ending.

    The mirror image and the same lesson: roughly 10 animals remain, below any plausible density for recovery. The passenger pigeon proved that a population can be doomed while it still looks large — the vaquita is what the last chapter looks like when we can still see it happening.

    The mammoth's closest living relative, now down to roughly 48,000–52,000 wild animals in fragmented pockets across 13 countries. The habitat fragmentation that finished the mammoth is the primary threat to the Asian elephant today — and this one can still be prevented.

    Roughly 10 remain, drowning in gillnets set for totoaba, whose swim bladders rise in value with every fish removed. The great auk's extinction economics are running again in the Gulf of California, on a shorter timescale.

    Another functionally blind freshwater dolphin in another heavily industrialised river system, facing the same combination of bycatch, irrigation barrages, boat traffic and pollution. Around 2,000 remain in a fraction of their original range — the baiji's position in the 1970s, with the outcome still open.

    Critically Endangered

    Roughly 76 animals in one Indonesian national park — every Javan rhino on Earth in a single location, vulnerable to one poaching incursion, one disease outbreak or one volcanic event. This is the western black rhino's position in the 1990s.

    Vulnerable

    Steller's sea cow's closest surviving relative, and an obligate seagrass grazer facing exactly the analogous problem: its food meadows are being lost to coastal development, dredging, boat scarring and warming seas. Some regional dugong populations are already listed as Critically Endangered.

    Endangered — Grévy's zebra

    The quagga was a plains zebra, and its surviving relatives show the range of outcomes. Plains zebras remain widespread; Grévy's zebra has fallen from around 15,000 in the 1970s to roughly 2,000 in Kenya and Ethiopia, squeezed by livestock competition for grazing and water. The same pressure that ended the quagga, on a population we are actually counting this time.

    Central and South American cloud-forest amphibians directly in the chytrid fungus's path, several with ranges as small as the golden toad's and the same dependence on constant humidity. Captive assurance colonies and habitat protection are the only defences that exist.

    Near Threatened

    A spectacular wild goat that was pushed to the edge by trophy hunting and livestock competition in the same way — and then recovered, from fewer than 2,500 animals to over 6,000, through community conservancy programmes in Pakistan and Tajikistan. It is the outcome the bucardo did not get.

    Least Concern — but locally vulnerable at pupping sites

    The same vulnerability, on beaches people can walk onto. Grey seals haul out and pup at a small number of predictable sites, and disturbance there separates pups from mothers and causes abandonment. Protecting a handful of specific locations is what stands between a recovered population and a declining one — exactly the intervention the Caribbean monk seal never received.

    New Zealand's surviving flightless giant — the world's heaviest parrot, flightless, slow-breeding, ground-nesting, and defenceless against the introduced stoats and rats that replaced human hunters. It survives only because every single bird is individually monitored on predator-free islands.

    A specialist high-altitude predator whose survival depends entirely on wild sheep and goats that are themselves being displaced by livestock. Remove the blue sheep and ibex and the snow leopard has nowhere to go — the Smilodon problem, still solvable.

What does extinct mean?
A species is extinct when no individuals remain alive anywhere, in the wild or in captivity. The IUCN applies the label only after exhaustive surveys of the known range, at appropriate times of day and season, have failed to record a single individual — which is why formal declarations usually come years or decades after the last sighting.
What is the difference between extinct, extinct in the wild and functionally extinct?
Extinct (EX) means no individuals survive anywhere. Extinct in the Wild (EW) means the species survives only in captivity or cultivation, with no wild population — the scimitar-horned oryx and Père David's deer are examples. Functionally extinct means individuals may remain but too few to reproduce and recover, so the outcome is settled even though animals are still alive; the northern white rhino, with two females left, is the clearest current case.
How many animal species have gone extinct?
Around 900 species have been formally documented as extinct since 1500 CE, but that number is a floor rather than an estimate. Most extinctions involve invertebrates, plants and fungi that were never described by science, and the IUCN's evidence standard for declaring extinction is deliberately high. Researchers estimate the true figure is many times the documented count.
What is the most recent animal to go extinct?
Among large animals, the baiji or Yangtze river dolphin, declared functionally extinct in 2006, and the western black rhino, declared extinct in 2011. Smaller species are declared more frequently: the IUCN moves multiple species to Extinct in most annual Red List updates, most of them molluscs, fish and amphibians that never received public attention.
Why do animals go extinct?
Habitat loss is the single largest driver, followed by overexploitation such as hunting and fishing, invasive species, pollution, climate change and disease. In almost every documented case at least two of these act together — habitat loss fragments a population into small isolated groups, and a second pressure then removes their capacity to recover.
Can extinct animals be brought back?
Not truly, on the current evidence. The only extinct animal ever cloned was the Pyrenean ibex in 2003, and it died within minutes of birth. Every other de-extinction project aims to edit a living relative's genome toward the extinct species' traits, producing a lookalike rather than a restoration. The habitat loss, invasive predators or hunting pressure that caused each extinction also generally still exist.
What can be done to stop more extinctions?
Protecting habitat, funding anti-poaching enforcement, controlling invasive predators on islands, and intervening before a population reaches double digits. Every extinction on this page had a known solution at some point in its decline; the difference between the ones we lost and the ones that recovered — the kākāpō, the Mediterranean monk seal, the black rhino — is whether that solution was funded in time.
