Why Regular Giving Changes What Gets Funded
The case for monthly giving is usually made as a convenience argument. The real reason is different, and it is about what kind of work becomes possible.
Predictable income buys different work
An organisation funded by unpredictable one-off gifts can only commit to work it could stop tomorrow. That rules out most of what actually changes outcomes: a multi-year sterilisation programme, a veterinary post someone depends on for their salary, a partner agreement that runs past this financial year.
Regular income is what lets a partner sign a lease, hire a vet, or plan vaccination rounds a year out. The same total money, arriving predictably, funds a different category of work.
Why street dog work in particular needs it
Catch, neuter, vaccinate and return only works if coverage reaches a high enough proportion of a local dog population and is sustained. Sterilise half a neighbourhood and stop, and the population recovers from the unsterilised half plus dogs moving in from adjacent territory.
That makes CNVR almost uniquely dependent on funding that does not stop. A campaign-funded programme that runs hard for three months and pauses can end up achieving very little for the money, which is the opposite of what the donors intended.
It costs less to administer
Fundraising has a cost, and repeatedly re-acquiring the same supporter is one of the larger ones. A regular gift is set up once and then arrives without further fundraising spend, so a higher share of it reaches the work. This is the least emotive argument for monthly giving and one of the strongest.
When a one-off gift is the better choice
Monthly is not always right, and it would be dishonest to pretend otherwise. A one-off gift suits an acute emergency, a post-seizure situation where animals need immediate quarantine and treatment, or simply a supporter who prefers to give when they choose rather than commit.
A small regular gift also beats a larger one you cancel in three months, both for the work and for you. Set it at a level you will not notice.
What we will not claim
We do not tell you that a specific sum saves a specific animal. Grants fund programmes — veterinary capacity, patrols, quarantine, equipment — and outcomes come from all of it working together, not from your particular payment landing on one animal.
WARN is also a Community Interest Company rather than a registered charity, which means no Gift Aid on UK donations and no US tax deduction.
