The Japanese sea lion (Zalophus japonicus) was a western Pacific pinniped hunted to extinction; commercial harvests removed thousands in the early twentieth century, and the last confirmed animal was recorded in 1974 off Hokkaido.

The Japanese sea lion is one of the most recent marine-mammal extinctions. Once common around Japan and Korea, it was hunted commercially until harvest numbers crashed from thousands per year to a few dozen by the 1930s. A 1950s survey reported only 50–60 animals on the Liancourt Rocks. The last confirmed record is a juvenile taken in 1974 off Rebun Island. Closely related to the California sea lion, it was long treated as a subspecies before being recognised as its own species — taxonomy that arrived too late to save it.

How fast a sea lion can be erased
Early twentieth-century harvest records describe thousands of Japanese sea lions taken annually at the peak, falling to hundreds by 1915 and to dozens by the 1930s. That trajectory is extinction arithmetic: remove breeding adults faster than a slow-maturing pinniped can replace them, and colonies empty. By mid-century only a handful of sites held animals. Wartime disturbance around coastal rocks added pressure to a population already past recovery without active protection.
