Every domestic cow alive today descends from the aurochs — a tall, long-horned wild ox that shaped European landscapes and human farming. Domestication began thousands of years ago in the Near East and elsewhere; the wild form was then hunted and squeezed into shrinking forests until the last recorded animal died in 1627 in Poland. The aurochs is not a prehistoric myth. It overlapped with printed books, royal hunting laws and the early modern state. What killed it was the ordinary expansion of farms and the prestige of killing the largest wild cattle left.

From dominant herbivore to royal rarity

Aurochs bones and images run through European prehistory into the Middle Ages. As agriculture spread, wild oxen lost floodplain forest and were hunted as trophies and food. By the 1500s they survived mainly in protected forests under noble or royal control. Poland's Jaktorów herd was among the last. When that herd died out in 1627, the wild species ended. Domestic cattle continued — genetically descended, ecologically different.

Domestication is not conservation

People sometimes treat the aurochs as unfinished business solved by milk and beef. Domestication saved genes in a transformed body; it did not save the wild animal's role as a large, free-ranging browser and grazer. Restoring that role today means living wild bovines — European bison, and carefully managed rewilding cattle — not pretending a dairy Holstein is an aurochs.

Breeding-back is approximation

Twentieth-century Heck cattle and later projects selected domestic breeds for aurochs-like horns, colour and size. They can be useful in grazing projects. They are not Bos primigenius. Extinction of the wild type removed behaviours, parasite relationships and genetic diversity that no museum cross can fully reconstruct.
