Caspian Tiger
Panthera tigris (Caspian / Turan population; historically P. t. virgata)
The Caspian tiger was a tiger population of river forests from the Caucasus and Iran through Central Asia, erased by hunting and clearance of tugai habitat; genetic work links it closely to the living Amur tiger, but the western population itself is extinct.

The Caspian tiger — also called the Hyrcanian or Turan tiger — lived not in tropical jungle but in the reed beds and riverside forests that threaded arid Central Asia and the Caspian shores. Those corridors were cleared, drained and hunted empty through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. By the mid-1900s the population was collapsing region by region. Genetic studies later showed Caspian and Amur tigers were closely related — close enough that reintroduction proposals have discussed using Amur stock in former Caspian range. The western animals themselves are gone.

Tigers of the reeds
Popular images of tigers default to rainforest or Indian grassland. Caspian tigers hunted wild pigs and deer in gallery forest and reeds along rivers such as the Amu Darya and in Hyrcanian woodlands south of the Caspian. Drain the reeds, settle the floodplain, and the cat has nowhere left that matches its hunting method.
Genetics after extinction
Museum specimens show Caspian and Amur tigers were closely related lineages. That finding fuels proposals to place Amur tigers into parts of Kazakhstan or Central Asia where tugai might be restored. Those projects, if they proceed, would be conservation introductions of a living relative — not the return of the Caspian population that hunters and ploughs removed.
