Smilodon is the most recognisable extinct predator on Earth and is almost universally described wrongly. It was not a tiger; it belonged to a separate subfamily of cats with no living members, and every big cat alive today is more closely related to your house cat than to Smilodon. It was not a lean sprinter but a heavily muscled ambush predator built like a bear, with forelimbs powerful enough to wrestle down prey before its fragile 18-centimetre canines were used. It disappeared around 10,000 years ago along with almost every large mammal in the Americas, because the animals it ate disappeared first.

Why did sabre-toothed cats go extinct?
Smilodon was a hyper-specialised predator of very large, slow herbivores — ground sloths, bison, horses, camels and juvenile mammoths and mastodons. That specialisation was an advantage for hundreds of thousands of years and a fatal liability at the end of the Pleistocene. Between roughly 13,000 and 10,000 years ago, the Americas lost the overwhelming majority of their large mammal species in the Quaternary megafauna extinction, driven by a combination of rapid climate change reshaping vegetation and the arrival of human hunters. Smilodon's entire anatomy — the mass, the forelimbs, the sabres — was built for a specific style of attack on very large prey. It could not switch to hunting small, fast animals; nothing about its build permitted it. When the megafauna went, the specialists that ate them went too, including Smilodon, the American lion and the short-faced bear. Generalists such as the puma and the jaguar survived.
How the sabres actually worked
The teeth are the reason Smilodon is famous and the reason its hunting method took so long to work out. The canines were long, but laterally compressed and structurally weak against sideways force — they would snap if used against a struggling animal or into bone. Bite force was around one third that of a lion. The current understanding is the canine shear-bite: Smilodon used exceptionally powerful neck and forelimb musculature to pin and immobilise prey with its body, then drove the sabres into the soft tissue of the throat with a downward motion of the head and neck rather than a jaw-powered bite, severing the trachea and major blood vessels for a fast kill. Everything about the animal supports that reconstruction — the massively built forelimbs, the enlarged neck muscle attachments, the short tail giving no high-speed balance. It was a grappler that used a blade, and the design worked for as long as there were animals large enough to be worth grappling.

What this extinction teaches
Specialists go extinct when their prey does. Predators built for one food source have no route to another — which is why conservation for tigers, snow leopards and wild dogs has to protect the prey base as much as the predator, and why "save the predator" without prey and habitat is not a plan.
