A photograph’s licence belongs to that photograph. Our open-data terms do not grant rights to third-party images.

Photographs and source credits

Follow the credit and licence attached to each image. Creative Commons photographs may require attribution, a link to the licence, an indication of changes and, for ShareAlike works, compatible licensing of adaptations. A Wikimedia Commons credit describes the hosting source; it does not mean every file has the same licence.

If a reuse permission is not stated, contact the rights holder or ask WARN for the source record before republishing. A missing field is not permission. Logos and third-party trademarks are not included in a general content licence.

WARN educational illustrations

Some species portraits are explicitly labelled as AI-generated educational illustrations. To the extent WARN controls the relevant rights, WARN permits these WARN-provided illustrations to be reused with attribution to World Animal Rescue Network, a link to the original page and the statement “AI-generated educational illustration”. Identify any changes you make.

Do not describe these illustrations as photographs or use them as documentary evidence of a named animal, location, disaster or rescue. This permission does not apply to third-party photographs, logos, or material that merely appears alongside an illustration. It is a reuse permission, not a claim that every generated image qualifies for copyright protection in every jurisdiction.

Images of real emergencies

Incident images need a verifiable source, event date, location and permission covering the intended use. A historical image or species portrait must be identified as such. We do not create generated “news photographs” of real rescues or disasters.
