Camel spider is a common name for solifugids — an order of arachnids separate from true spiders. They have eight legs plus a pair of leg-like pedipalps that make them look ten-legged in photographs. They run fast for arthropods, have large chelicerae and no venom glands like those of spiders. The name 'camel spider' reflects desert habitat, not any association with camels. Deployed soldiers' photos from Iraq and Afghanistan, with forced perspective making animals look table-sized, fuelled myths about sprinting at human speed, screaming, and venom that liquefies flesh. Not a spider — and not a camel
True spiders belong to order Araneae and produce silk from spinnerets; almost all use venom from glands to subdue prey. Solifugids produce no silk and no spider-style venom. They sit in class Arachnida alongside spiders, scorpions, harvestmen and mites, but on a separate evolutionary branch. The animal appears forearm-length; in reality body length for most species is a few centimetres, with leg span larger but not dinner-plate size. Stories about camel spiders chasing soldiers, screaming, and feeding under camel bellies are folklore amplified by email chains. Solifugids are nocturnal or crepuscular hunters of insects and small vertebrates in desert burrows. They can run quickly relative to their size — estimates in scientific sources are on the order of a few metres per second for short bursts, not 30 mph.
