Colour change comes in several forms. Rapid active camouflage — an octopus matching a reef in seconds — is not the same as seasonal moulting or gradual colour morphing. Arctic foxes turn white in winter through fur replacement, not by changing the colour of existing tissue.

This list includes animals that actively alter body colour or pattern within minutes to hours using physiological mechanisms. Seasonal coat changes and developmental colour shifts are noted but distinguished from true rapid colour change.

Entries are species that actively change body colour or pattern within hours or less through physiological mechanisms — chromatophore expansion, pigment dispersal or structural colour change. Seasonal fur or feather replacement is noted separately and not counted as rapid colour change. Speed and range of change are noted. Species that change colour only during moulting or development are excluded from the primary ranking.
