Bioluminescent animals — including fireflies, anglerfish, vampire squid and many deep-sea jellyfish — produce light through chemical reactions, ranked here by whether light is produced by the animal itself rather than by symbiotic bacteria or reflected fluorescence.

Glowing animals produce light through one of three mechanisms: bioluminescence (a chemical reaction within the animal), biofluorescence (absorbing light and re-emitting it at a different wavelength) or bacterial symbiosis (hosting light-producing bacteria). These are not the same thing and produce different rankings.

This list focuses on true bioluminescence — light generated by a chemical reaction, usually involving luciferin and luciferase. Biofluorescent species are noted separately. The majority of bioluminescent species live in the deep ocean, where sunlight never reaches.

How this list was compiled

Entries are species that produce light through their own biochemical reaction (bioluminescence) or through symbiotic bacteria housed in specialised organs. Biofluorescence — re-emitting absorbed light — is noted but distinguished. Reflective or iridescent colouration is excluded. Light function — communication, predation, counter-illumination — is noted for each entry.

    Light produced in abdominal light organs through luciferin-luciferase reaction. Each species has a unique flash pattern.
