The Most Venomous Animals on Earth

Ranked by median lethal dose in mice (LD50), the inland taipan has the most toxic venom of any snake tested, but venom toxicity and real-world danger are not the same thing — the box jellyfish kills more people because it injects venom in circumstances humans cannot avoid.

Venomous and poisonous are not the same thing. Venom is injected — through a bite, sting or spine. Poison is ingested or absorbed through contact. This list covers venomous animals only; for animals that are toxic when eaten or touched, see the venomous-vs-poisonous list.

Rankings here use LD50 — the dose required to kill half of a test population, usually mice — because it is the standard comparative measure in toxinology. LD50 does not predict human deaths: delivery mechanism, venom yield, encounter rate and access to antivenom all matter as much as toxicity per milligram.

How this list was compiled

Entries are ranked primarily by venom LD50 in mice, expressed as micrograms per kilogram where data exist. This measures toxicity per unit mass, not total venom yield or annual human fatalities. Animals whose danger comes from volume injected rather than per-milligram potency are noted separately. Poisonous-but-not-venomous species are excluded. Where LD50 varies by study, the range is given rather than a single precise figure.

    The most toxic snake venom in standard LD50 tests. Bites to humans are extremely rare due to remote habitat.
