The white tiger is one of the most searched animals on the internet and one of the most consistently misdescribed. It is not a species, not a subspecies, and not an endangered animal in need of protection. It is a Bengal tiger carrying two copies of a recessive pigmentation gene. There are no white tigers in the wild. Every white tiger alive today is in captivity, and effectively all of them trace back to a single wild male cub captured in India in 1951. Producing them reliably requires mating close relatives, generation after generation — and the health consequences of doing so are well documented.

Treating the white tiger as an endangered animal is the single most common error about it. The Bengal tiger is Endangered. The white morph is a captive-bred variant with no wild population and no conservation programme.

What actually makes a tiger white
In 2013 a research team sequenced white and orange tigers from the same families and traced the coat to a single change in the SLC45A2 gene, which is involved in pigment transport. A single amino-acid substitution blocks the production of red and yellow pigment while leaving black pigment intact. That is why a white tiger still has stripes. It is also why the term albino is wrong: an albino animal cannot produce melanin at all and has pink eyes from the blood vessels showing through an unpigmented iris. White tigers have pigmented stripes and typically blue eyes. The variant is recessive. A tiger needs two copies to be white, which means both parents must carry it — and that is where the welfare problem begins.
One cub in 1951, and everything since
In 1951 a white male cub was captured in Rewa, in what is now Madhya Pradesh, India. He was named Mohan, and he became the founder of the captive white tiger population. Because the trait is recessive and rare, the way to reliably produce more white cubs from a single founder is to breed him back to his own descendants. That is what was done. The captive white tiger population was built from a very small number of founding animals through repeated close mating — father to daughter, sibling to sibling. Every white tiger in a zoo, a roadside attraction or a private collection today is the outcome of that programme. They are not a rare wild lineage being preserved. They are a small, deliberately inbred captive line maintained because white cubs draw crowds.
The cost of the coat
Sustained inbreeding concentrates harmful recessive traits along with the desirable one. In white tigers this shows up consistently and is well recorded: Crossed eyes (strabismus) are common, and are linked to the same pigmentation pathway — reduced pigment disrupts the normal wiring of the optic nerve. Cleft palate, spinal curvature, hip dysplasia, shortened tendons, kidney problems and immune deficiency all appear at elevated rates. Stillbirths and neonatal deaths are frequent, and many cubs born in white tiger breeding programmes do not survive. A widely cited consequence is that a substantial proportion of cubs produced in pursuit of a white one are not white at all, and have historically been surplus to a facility's needs. What happens to those animals is the part of the white tiger story that is least often told.
Why zoos stopped
The Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the main accrediting body for zoos in the United States, moved against the practice and now bars its members from deliberately breeding for white coat colour and similar novelty traits. The reasoning is straightforward: the breeding serves no conservation purpose, it requires inbreeding that harms the animals, and it misleads the public about what tiger conservation involves. Legitimate tiger conservation breeding works in the opposite direction. It tracks pedigrees specifically to maximise genetic diversity and avoid relatedness, because a captive population is only useful as a genetic reserve if it stays diverse. Breeding for a rare recessive coat does the reverse by design. White tigers are therefore not merely conservation-neutral. The animals occupy space, funding and public attention that a genuinely endangered tiger population could use.
What to make of the attractions
White tigers remain a fixture of roadside zoos, private collections and photo-opportunity businesses, often marketed with language about rarity and endangerment. That marketing is where most of the public confusion originates. If a facility describes a white tiger as an endangered species, or implies that breeding it helps save tigers in the wild, that is a reliable signal about the facility rather than the animal. Cub-petting operations in particular depend on a continuous supply of young animals, which requires continuous breeding, which requires somewhere for the animals to go once they are too large to handle. The tigers that need help are the roughly wild ones — and Bengal tigers, orange ones, are genuinely Endangered.
