The male's neck — technically an elongated prothorax — can be two to three times the length of the female's, and he uses it to fight other males and to roll leaves into tubes where the female lays a single egg. Madagascar holds roughly 90% vertebrate endemism, and its invertebrate fauna is equally distinctive — the giraffe weevil is one of the island's most photographed endemics. Why the male neck is so long
Sexual selection, not feeding. The giraffe weevil's elongated prothorax is a weapon and a tool. Males fight by grappling with their necks, attempting to flip rivals off branches.
