Solitary bees: the hidden majority

A solitary bee's life is direct. In spring, a mated female emerges, selects a nest site — a burrow in bare soil, a hollow stem, a beetle hole in wood, a crevice in a wall — and builds cells. Each cell receives a pollen-and-nectar loaf and a single egg. She seals the cell and repeats until her energy is spent. Her offspring develop alone, pupate, and emerge the following season. There is no worker caste to share the load. Mining bees (Andrena and related genera) are often the first bees active in early spring, nesting in lawns and banks in conspicuous aggregations that alarm homeowners but rarely sting. Mason bees (Osmia) use mud partitions and are excellent orchard pollinators — a few hundred Osmia can match the pollination output of thousands of honey bees on fruit trees because they contact more stigma per visit. Leafcutter bees (Megachile) cut circular leaf pieces with their mandibles, a sign of their presence that gardeners sometimes notice before the bee itself. Social bees beyond the honey bee

True eusociality — overlapping generations, cooperative brood care and reproductive division of labour — evolved multiple times in bees but remains rare. Stingless bees (Meliponini) are tropical and subtropical social bees with complex nest architecture and communication, culturally important in Mesoamerica and parts of Asia and Australia. Retain dead stems and beetle holes for cavity nesters; cut stem sections can be bundled horizontally in sheltered spots. Plant a succession of native flowers from early spring through autumn so something is always in bloom. Avoid systemic insecticides, particularly neonicotinoids, which persist in plant tissue and pollen. Farm margins, roadside verges and garden corners that are left unsprayed function as bee reservoirs in otherwise intensive landscapes. Local native plants support local native bees better than exotic ornamentals chosen only for appearance.
