The black mamba (Dendroaspis polylepis) is the longest venomous snake in Africa, reaching around 4.3 metres, yet its name refers to the dark interior of the mouth displayed in threat, not to skin colour, which is grey to olive. Green mambas — western, eastern and Jameson's — are arboreal forest and woodland specialists, vivid green and slender.
