Animals With No Brain

Many simple animals — including jellyfish, sea stars, sea cucumbers and sponges — have no centralised brain, using nerve nets or distributed nerve cells instead; this does not mean they cannot respond to their environment.

No brain does not mean no nervous system. Jellyfish have nerve nets capable of coordinated movement and response to stimuli. Sponges lack even a nervous system entirely. The absence of a centralised brain is the ancestral condition for animals — brains evolved later in bilaterally symmetrical animals.

This list includes animals with no centralised brain, noting what nervous structures they do have. Intelligence and behavioural complexity are not implied by brain presence alone — octopuses have large brains relative to body size, while sea stars function without one.

How this list was compiled

Entries are animals lacking a centralised brain — no concentrated mass of neural tissue serving as a central processing organ. Distributed nerve nets, ganglia and radial nerve rings are noted. Sponges, which lack any nervous system, are distinguished from cnidarians and echinoderms with nerve nets. Behavioural capacity despite no brain is noted to avoid implying these animals cannot respond to stimuli.

    Distributed nerve net coordinates swimming and stinging. Rhopalia contain light-sensitive and gravity-sensing structures.

    A nerve ring around the mouth coordinates five radial nerves. No central brain.

    Network of nerves in the test (shell). Can orient toward light and smell using distributed sensors.

    A nerve ring around the pharynx is the most centralised structure — functionally not a brain.

    Individual polyps have simple nerve nets. Colony coordination is chemical rather than neural.

    Freshwater cnidarian with a diffuse nerve net. Can coordinate tentacle movement without a brain.

    Has an aboral sensory organ with statocyst and light sensors — the most centralised structure in a ctenophore, but not a true brain.

    Some flatworms have paired cerebral ganglia — often described as a primitive brain. Simpler species have only a nerve net.

    Free-swimming sponge larvae briefly have more nervous tissue than adult sponges, which have none.
