Animals That Mate for Life

Mate for life is one of the most repeated claims in nature writing and one of the least accurate. Social monogamy — two adults associating and cooperating over multiple breeding seasons — is real and well documented. Genetic monogamy — all offspring sired by the social partner — is rare.

DNA fingerprinting of wild populations has found extra-pair paternity in swans, albatrosses, penguins and gibbons, among others. This list includes species with strong, persistent pair bonds, with the distinction between social and genetic monogamy stated for each.
