The Indus River dolphin is often called the "blind dolphin" for good reason. It has eyes, but they cannot form images. Instead, this remarkable animal navigates one of the murkiest rivers on Earth entirely by sound. Here is why it lost its sight, and how it copes. It lives where eyes are useless
The Indus carries enormous loads of silt, leaving its water thick and brown. Light barely penetrates. In an environment this dark, sharp vision offers almost no advantage, and over evolutionary time the dolphin's eyes degenerated.
Its eyes have no lens
The bhulan lacks a crystalline lens, the structure that focuses light into an image. As a result it is considered functionally blind. It can probably still detect the direction and intensity of light, enough to sense day from night or the shadow of an obstacle, but not enough to see shapes.
How it "sees" with sound
In place of vision, the dolphin produces a near-constant stream of high-frequency clicks and listens for the echoes that bounce back. This biological sonar, or echolocation, builds a detailed acoustic picture of the riverbed, obstacles and prey, even in zero visibility.
Why it swims on its side
The Indus dolphin commonly swims tilted onto one flank, sweeping a flipper just above the bottom. This posture is thought to help it scan the riverbed and detect bottom-dwelling fish such as catfish and carp, along with prawns and other invertebrates. It rights itself to surface and breathe.
What this means for its survival
Being blind is not the dolphin's problem; people are. Because it relies on a healthy, flowing river full of fish, anything that drains or fragments the Indus hits it hard. Dams and irrigation barrages have divided its range and cut its distribution by around 80 percent, and dolphins are regularly stranded in canals when flows drop. The IUCN lists the species as Endangered, with roughly 1,987 mature individuals.
A sense worth protecting
The bhulan's sonar makes it superbly adapted to its river, but it cannot adapt to a river that is drained away.
