History & Origins

The leopard gecko (Eublepharis macularius) is a ground-dwelling, nocturnal lizard from the rocky deserts and dry grasslands of Afghanistan, Pakistan and north-west India. One of the first reptiles to be widely captive-bred, it has been kept since the 1970s and now exists in hundreds of colour and pattern morphs. Its hardy nature, modest size and characteristic movable eyelids (unusual among geckos) make it one of the most beginner-friendly pet reptiles.

Metabolic bone disease

Calcium and vitamin D3 deficiency or inadequate UVB lighting softens and deforms the shell and bones.

Care: Provide correct UVB lighting, a calcium-rich plant diet and vet-guided supplementation.

Impaction

Swallowed substrate or oversized, hard prey can block the gut, causing loss of appetite, straining, swelling and lethargy — a potentially fatal emergency in geckos and other reptiles.

Care: Use appropriate substrate and correctly sized prey, keep temperatures correct for digestion, and seek urgent reptile-vet care if a reptile stops passing stools.

Dysecdysis (retained shed)

Incomplete shedding — usually from low humidity — leaves stuck skin that can constrict toes and tail tips or cover the eyes, causing tissue damage if it builds up.

Care: Maintain correct humidity and provide a humid hide and water; never peel stuck shed off dry — soak gently and see a reptile vet for retained eye caps or constricting rings.
