Why do animals need a disaster fund?

Human disaster plans still treat animals as an afterthought. People evacuate. Dogs, cats, working donkeys and livestock stay. Official death counts almost never include them. UNDRR recorded 4.2 billion people affected by disasters between 2000 and 2019; the animal figure was never compiled.

Pakistan’s 2022 floods killed an estimated 1.16 million livestock, according to the government and World Bank post-disaster assessment. Companion animals in the same water were not counted. The Philippines and Vietnam sit in the typhoon belt. Indonesia sits on the Ring of Fire. Those countries are already in WARN’s partner network. This page exists so partners there can surge without waiting for a new viral appeal.

Some international charities fly their own responders. That is a real model, and it is not WARN’s. WARN is a UK Community Interest Company that grants to vetted local organisations. The improvement on this page is honesty: you can give in one checkout, you can see who should skip it, and you will not be sold an airlift WARN does not run.

Which disasters can this appeal fund?

Only where WARN already has a partner. A named crisis outside the network is not a reason to pretend otherwise — give to the organisation that actually works there.

What happens to animals in a disaster?

Animals are left behind

When people flee a flood, typhoon or earthquake, dogs, cats, working donkeys and livestock often stay. Many emergency shelters still do not take animals. The animals that remain drink contaminated water, go unfed, and are injured by debris.

Clinics and kennels go under water

Partner shelters lose power, cold-chain vaccines, medicines and cages in the same hours the caseload explodes. A standing fund buys replacements locally. A parcel of kibble from Britain arrives after the peak.

Disease follows the water

Floods raise leptospirosis, skin infection and rabies-risk bite injuries as frightened animals and people share the same high ground. Vaccines and wound care have to be in-country already, or they miss the window.

The cameras leave; the animals do not

Viral appeals spike for a week. Reconstruction of kennels, restocking of vaccine and feeding of animals whose owners have not returned takes months. Monthly gifts are what cover that tail — not a one-off after a news clip.

You give on this page. WARN holds the gift for this appeal and releases it as grants to vetted partners when a disaster hits the network — or to pre-position supplies in flood- and typhoon-prone cities before the season starts.

Partners buy feed, medicines, fuel and shelter materials close to the animals. That is faster than a container from Europe and it leaves money in the community already carrying the load.

WARN does not run WARN-branded disaster camps. The model is the same as every other appeal: grants to organisations that already have veterinary staff, catching protocols and local permission.

If a gift arrives when no disaster is active, it stays marked for this appeal and funds readiness — cold-chain repairs, crate stocks, fuel reserves — so the next response is not a standing start.

No. Those organisations describe their own responder teams and past missions in many countries. WARN does not airlift a disaster team from Britain. This page funds surge grants to vetted partners WARN already works with in its network. If you wanted a charity that deploys its own responders worldwide, give to them — not here under that impression.
Does WARN operate a disaster response service in the UK?
No. Household preparedness, evacuation with pets and lost-pet searches after a British flood are pet emergency preparedness and your local registered rescue. This appeal is overseas partner surge only.
Which countries can this appeal fund?
The funded geography is WARN’s 17-country partner network — including Pakistan (floods), the Philippines and Vietnam (typhoons), Indonesia (earthquakes and volcanic events), India, Sri Lanka, Kenya and South Africa (heat, drought and fire). What animals does disaster relief actually reach?
Mostly the animals left behind: free-roaming dogs and cats, working donkeys and horses, and livestock. Wildlife is helped where a partner already has a rehabilitation licence. WARN does not promise a named pet returned to a UK home.
Should I wait until a named disaster is on the news?
No. By the time a flood is viral, partners already need fuel, vaccine and feed. A standing monthly gift is what lets them move on day one. A one-off on this page still helps after a named event — Stripe emails a receipt marked for this appeal.
Can I send food or crates from the UK instead?
Please donate money unless a named partner has asked for a specific item in writing. Parcels usually arrive late, cost more than buying locally, and can fail customs. The same rule is on every WARN appeal.
Is this the Karachi street-dog appeal?
No. Karachi street-dog appeal is the ongoing Catch-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return and rabies programme in Pakistan. This page is the surge fund for disasters across the network, including floods that hit those same street dogs. You can give to both.
Will my gift rescue animals from rubble like the news photos?
Do not give for a cinematic extraction. Partners treat wounds, feed stranded animals, restock clinics and hold animals until owners return. Some animals are pulled from debris by local teams; WARN does not invoice that as a unit cost and does not publish a headcount before partner reporting exists.
