Uganda
Uganda holds roughly half the world's remaining mountain gorillas, alongside chimpanzees, elephants and lions in the Albertine Rift — one of Africa's richest and most crowded wildl
Uganda is an East African country in the Albertine Rift where WARN's planned work funds partner-led mountain-gorilla veterinary response, snare removal, humane human-wildlife conflict mitigation and care for confiscated wildlife — not WARN-run facilities or tourism operations.
Key Facts About Uganda
- Roughly half the world's mountain gorillas live in Bwindi and Mgahinga.
- Eastern chimpanzees, African elephants and lions share densely settled landscapes in the Albertine Rift.
- Snaring for bushmeat and disease transmission from humans are persistent great-ape threats.
- Gorilla tourism funds conservation but requires strict health protocols to protect apes.
- WARN's planned Uganda work would fund partner veterinary, conflict-mitigation and rescue capacity — not WARN-run sites.
- Uganda holds roughly half the world's remaining mountain gorillas alongside chimpanzees and elephants.
- Bwindi and Mgahinga gorilla tourism funds conservation but requires strict disease protocols.
What is the wildlife situation in Uganda?
Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable and Mgahinga Gorilla National Parks hold roughly half the world's mountain gorillas. Kibale and Budongo forests hold large chimpanzee populations. Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls protect elephants, lions and hippos in landscapes bordered by intensive farming — producing constant human-wildlife conflict.
What is WARN preparing to do in Uganda?
WARN would make grants to and partner with established Ugandan and regional organisations — funding veterinary response for snared and injured gorillas and other wildlife, humane conflict mitigation around park boundaries, and care of orphaned and confiscated animals. We would not run our own facilities and would respect strict disease-prevention protocols for great apes.
Why Uganda matters
Uganda shares the mountain-gorilla recovery with Rwanda and the DRC — the only great-ape success story on earth. Sustaining that recovery requires continuous partner funding for veterinary care, snare removal and community benefit at park edges.
Great-ape disease risk
Gorillas and chimpanzees share much of our DNA and are acutely vulnerable to human respiratory and gastrointestinal diseases. Strict viewing distances and health protocols exist because a common cold can kill a gorilla — a constraint WARN's partner model respects.
Conflict in the Albertine Rift
Elephants, hippos and primates raid crops across one of Africa's most densely settled wildlife corridors. Humane electric fencing, early-warning systems and community benefit programmes protect both animals and farmers.
Mountain gorilla veterinary response
Snares, respiratory disease from human proximity and habitat pressure at park edges require continuous veterinary monitoring. WARN grants support established Ugandan and regional partners — not WARN-run trekking.
Human-wildlife conflict in the Albertine Rift
Elephants, hippos and primates raid crops across one of Africa's most densely settled wildlife corridors. Humane conflict mitigation protects animals and farming communities together.
Threats to Wildlife in Uganda
Snaring as bushmeat bycatch
Disease transmission from humans
Human-wildlife conflict at park edges
Habitat pressure from dense settlement
Wildlife trafficking
What WARN Funds in Uganda
Our planned Uganda work would make grants to and partner with established Ugandan and regional organisations — funding veterinary response for snared and injured wildlife, humane conflict mitigation, and care of orphaned and confiscated animals. WARN would not run its own facilities.
