## How to tell which type of horse you are looking at

Decide whether you need a build type (draft, pony, light), a beginner list, or an honest account of working equines. Then open the matching WARN list or appeal. Do not treat a type band as a purchase recommendation.

## What are types of horses?

Types of horses are filing systems for build and historical job. A breed is a named population with a studbook. A type is a drawer — draft, pony, light, stock, warmblood — that can hold several breeds.

Search treats “types of horses” and “horse breeds” as near-synonyms. They are not the same job. Quarter Horse and Arabian are breeds. Draft and pony are types. WARN’s 24-breed library already stores type on each guide, which is why draft and pony lists derive cleanly.

Working horses that haul bricks, water and goods are still Equus caballus. They are a type of horse in the welfare sense. They are not a showing class you book for a hacking holiday.

## What are the main types of horses?

On WARN’s library the type bands are Light, Draft, Pony, Stock and Warmblood. Those words describe conformation and the job the animal was bred to do — not how easy it is to keep.

Draft types were selected to pull. They are generally heavier, calmer around machinery, and shorter-lived than riding types. Pony types are height-banded in everyday speech; they still need the same welfare basics as a horse. Light types include Thoroughbreds and Arabians — speed and sensitivity, not beginner-proof. Stock types (Quarter Horse, Paint) were selected for cattle and short-distance work. Warmbloods sit between light and draft for sport.
Height labels and type labels overlap. A large pony and a small horse can share a job. Type is a rough guide. Age, schooling and the rider’s experience decide whether the match is safe.
Hot-blooded light types off the track are wonderful horses in experienced hands and a poor first horse. This page will not rank them as “the best type”.

## Are zebras types of horses?
